A Windows PC is the best place to see how good PSP games can look. Even a modest laptop with integrated graphics can run most titles at 1080p, and a dedicated graphics card lets you push to 4K with texture upscaling. The Windows build of PPSSPP is portable, so there is no installer to fight with.

Download and unzip

Use the Windows download on our homepage. You receive a zip file. Right-click it, choose Extract All, and place the folder somewhere permanent such as Documents\PPSSPP. Because the emulator is portable, your settings and saves are stored inside this folder, which makes backing up as easy as copying it.

First launch

Double-click PPSSPPWindows64.exe. If Windows SmartScreen shows a warning, click More info and then Run anyway; this appears for many open-source programs that are not sold through the Microsoft Store. Go to the Games tab and browse to the folder that holds your ISO files.

Keyboard and controller mapping

Open Settings > Controls > Control mapping. Each PSP button can be assigned to a key or a controller input. Xbox controllers work right away, and recent versions support DualSense, DualShock and Switch Pro controllers natively on Windows, including tilt controls on supported pads. A sensible keyboard layout uses the arrow keys for the D-pad, WASD for the analog stick, and the I, J, K and L keys for the four face buttons.

  • Backend: Vulkan on most graphics cards, Direct3D 11 if you see glitches.
  • Rendering resolution: 4x for 1080p screens, 6x or 8x for 1440p and 4K.
  • Anisotropic filtering: 16x. It costs almost nothing and sharpens floors and roads.
  • Texture upscaling: start with xBRZ at 2x and only raise it if your GPU has headroom.
  • Frame skipping: off. On a PC you rarely need it.

Fullscreen and window size

Press Alt+Enter or F11 to toggle fullscreen. In windowed mode you can choose a fixed size from the View menu. Set the display layout to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio so the image is never stretched.

Keeping it updated

New releases arrive several times a year with compatibility and speed fixes. To update, download the new zip and extract it over your existing folder. Your memstick folder with saves and settings stays intact, but copying it somewhere safe first never hurts.
