Android is the most popular way to play PSP games today, and for good reason. A mid-range phone from the last few years is several times more powerful than the original handheld, so a PSP emulator can render games at double or triple the native resolution while keeping a steady frame rate. This guide walks through the whole setup using PPSSPP, the free and open-source emulator that nearly everyone uses.
What you need before you start
- An Android phone or tablet running Android 10 or newer for the latest 64-bit build. Older devices can still use earlier releases.
- Around 150 MB of free space for the app, plus room for your games. A single PSP game is usually between 200 MB and 1.8 GB.
- Game files you made from discs you own, or free homebrew titles. No games are bundled with the emulator.
Step 1: Get the APK or use the Play Store
You have two safe sources. The Google Play Store listing updates automatically, but new versions roll out gradually. The download button on our homepage gives you the official APK file directly, which is useful when you want the newest release straight away or your phone has no Play Store.
Step 2: Allow installs from your browser
When you open a downloaded APK, Android asks for permission to install apps from that source. Tap Settings, switch on Allow from this source for your browser or file manager, then go back and tap Install. You can turn the permission off again once the emulator is installed.
Step 3: Create a games folder
Open your file manager and create a folder named PSP/GAME in internal storage or on your SD card. Copy your .iso, .cso or .chd files there. Keeping everything in one place makes the game browser tidy and backups simple.
Step 4: Point the emulator at your folder
Launch PPSSPP, open the Games tab and browse to the folder you created. Tap the star or the home icon to pin it, so the emulator opens there every time. Recent Android versions use a system file picker; select the folder and grant access when asked.
Step 5: Launch and adjust
Tap a game to start it. The default settings are a good starting point for most phones. If the game runs smoothly, try raising the rendering resolution to 2x or 3x under Settings > Graphics. If it stutters, our guide to settings for low-end phones covers the changes that make the biggest difference.
Tip: if the on-screen buttons cover important parts of the picture, open Controls > Customize touch control layout and drag them to the edges, or lower their opacity.
Common problems
The app will not install. Make sure your phone is 64-bit and on Android 10 or later for the newest build. Older phones need an earlier version.
The game list is empty. The folder permission was probably not granted. Remove the folder from the browser and add it again, accepting the access prompt.
Black screen on launch. Switch the graphics backend between Vulkan and OpenGL in the graphics settings and restart the emulator. One of the two almost always works.
